  1. I think its worth pointing out that in the last decade, research has come to deny the idea of an expanded octet for main group elements. The accepted theory in academia is that of the 3-Center-4-Electron model where atoms aligned in straight lines due to p orbitals resonate between an attached and detached bond similar to resonance bonds in other molecules such as ozone. The 3-C-4E bond has been experimentally shown to be less than a full bond and maintains the real energetic data presented by experimental verification of molecular orbital theory.
