Natural Treatments for Sleep Apnea

Natural Treatments for Sleep Apnea

Hey, guys. Dr. Axe, here, doctor of natural
medicine and founder of DrAxe.com. In this video, I’m going to go through a seven-step
process on how to overcome sleep apnea. If you struggle with sleep apnea, snoring, insomnia,
just trouble sleeping at night, these tips are going to help you big time. The number one thing you’ve got to start doing
if you want to overcome sleep apnea is look at your diet. Now, sometimes sleep apnea can
be related to weight gain. It can be related to inflammation in different areas of your
body. But if you can follow these dietary tips, it’s going to help tremendously. The first thing you want to do is you really
want to focus on supporting your metabolism. You want to focus on getting three things
every single meal: good quality protein, healthy fat, and fiber, those three things. Most people
with sleep apnea, most people tend to consume too many carbohydrates and too much sugar,
which can actually affect your insulin levels and your metabolism, which causes sleep apnea.
So again, healthy protein, such as bone broth protein, organic chicken and turkey, wild-caught
fish, grass-fed beef, getting good quality protein is important. Number two, fiber, getting more vegetables
and fruits in your diet and whole-sprouted grains, such as brown rice, that’s where you
want to get your fiber. The healthy fats, things like coconut oil, olive oil, organic
nuts and seeds, those are some ways to get some good healthy fat in your diet. So again,
focus on a healthy diet, a diet that’s anti-inflammatory and that helps balance out insulin levels
is going to be big when it comes to beating sleep apnea. Number two, there are certain things you want
to avoid. If you have sleep apnea, you want to avoid intake of alcohol, caffeine, smoking,
and also you need to be aware of sedatives. If you’re taking sedatives on a regular basis,
that can really cause sleep apnea. Stay away from those things. If you’re saying to yourself,
“Well, I’m still going to do caffeine and alcohol,” then what I would do is not do coffee.
I would just do a little bit of tea, like a green tea during the day. So again, just tone it down some. The other
thing I would do is, if you’re drinking alcohol, limit it to one glass. When you start doing
more than one glass, more than one beer, more than one glass of alcohol, that’s really going
to affect your sleep cycle. And no more than two days a week. Again, bring the alcohol
down, because that will absolutely cause sleep apnea. The number three tip is to treat acid reflux.
Many people with sleep apnea have heartburn, GERD, or acid reflux, or some type of digestive
issue that’s causing their sleep apnea. Now, the way to overcome that is to follow these
dietary tips. You want to eat smaller meals, so you don’t want to overeat, and get more
organic meat, vegetables, and fruits. You’ve got to be careful overconsuming the
grains, the pastas, the breads, the chips. All of those things will really cause acid
reflux and sleep apnea. Also, supplementing with digestive enzymes, probiotics, and apple
cider vinegar. So probiotics, enzymes, and apple cider vinegar, all of those can help
in the natural treatment of acid reflux and reduce sleep apnea. The number four thing you want to consider
doing to beat sleep apnea is getting a humidifier in your bedroom. Oftentimes, it’s the humidity
or being too dry in the bedroom that actually causes sleep apnea. So look into getting a
humidifier and sometimes an air purifier. So a humidifier, an air purifier, those things
can actually help support your body and you breathing better and overcoming sleep apnea. Number five is your sleeping position. Many
people with sleep apnea sleep on their back. Some of them sleep on their stomach. You want
to sleep on your side. What you want to do is get a good pillow that you’re comfortable
with laying on your side, and then you want to get a body pillow, something you can really
have in between your knees and hug with your arms. It might be two pillows, or it might
be one big body pillow. But you want to sleep on your side if you have sleep apnea. It might
be the number one effective way to overcome sleep apnea, again, sleeping on your side. Listen, it takes a while to sleep on your
side if you’ve been a back or a stomach sleeper. I know, for me, I was a stomach sleeper throughout
my adolescent life, and it got to the point where it gave me back pain. So I started sleeping
on my side, and it took me two weeks to fall asleep. But after two weeks, I started sleeping
like a baby again. So again, it does take time to get used to, changing your sleeping
position, but that is a very crucial thing in overcoming sleep apnea. Number six is exercise. You don’t have to
do any type of radical exercise, but just getting out and moving. If you’re very sedentary
and sitting all the time, that will cause sleep apnea. We really need to open up your
airways, improve your lung capacity. The best way to do that is through cardiovascular exercise,
weight training, or doing burst training is fantastic as well, but really increasing your
oxygen capacity. Cycling is fantastic. Swimming is great. Running is great. But cycling and
swimming especially are great ways to open up those airways. Number seven, use essential oils, specifically
peppermint oil and lavender, a blend of peppermint and lavender. Lavender calms your body, and
peppermint opens the airways. Eucalyptus and chamomile are other essential oils you might
try. Those are the four most effective essential oils to help relax the body and open up those
airways. I guarantee if you try those seven tips, you’re going to see improvements in
sleep apnea. For a more in-depth guide on how to overcome

  1. This guy is a dangerous charlatan. Listening to this guy can help you die quickly. "Bone broth protein"? Really? Not a CPAP which you can SEE relieve OSA 100% in the first night you use it. Also, does this guy know the difference between OSA and CSA? Mixed apnea? When you got your diagnosis did you NOT have someone explain proven, actual, real methods for relieving your symptoms? GERD is bad. It does NOT cause sleep apnea. Posting this kind of nonsense is irresponsible. I have performed over 400 sleep studies, including 100's of CPAP titrations which relieved OSA in one night and forever.

  19. Sleep apnea can be caused by many different things. Fixing your diet and losing weight will work for some but for those who suffer from sleep apnea for other reasons need to find out the underlying cause. Suggesting a simple diet change can cure sleep apnea for everyone is ridiculous especially by someone calling himself a doctor.

No more drying out, when you use this product. It helps to direct the forced air coming from your CPap. I actually stop using my C Pap , but go back and forth. 24. Dr. Axe, I really need help. I use a cpap and it doesn’t help me. I can sleep and feel like I’ve had no sleep. This is everyday. I can sleep for two or three days straight. This can effect my concentration, memory, speech, and response time. The sleep doctor says I have idiopathic hypersomnia. I am going to try everything in your video. But I have questions and a schedule and what to do. Please can you help me?

  25. I use Lavender in my CPAP and look forward to using Peppermit tonight. This will be controversial but I assume that you said to avoid smoking for the damage it does the lungs. But the research I have read says that nicotine increases the oxygen to the brain. So if I need a good night sleep I use a nicotine patch and I wake up less hung over. Apnea in my experience creates two problems a hung over feeling from lack of oxygen and drowsiness from lack of deep sleep. Nicotine helps with the former, when I wake up I don't feel like I just went a round with Tyson, maybe half a round. Pretty sure I have more central sleep apnea because all my success in opening up my sinuses has done little to help my sleep. Sleeping with nicotine is tough because it takes me almost 4-5 minutes to fall asleep rather than the normal 30 seconds. Also taking anti oxidents before and after sleeping helps reduce the damage from hypoxia (lack of oxygen to the brain). I am bad and mix oral Thyme and hydrogen water. Lately I have been limiting my sleep to 3 hours and taking lots of naps that allow my body to recover before going another round. Hypoxia is a nasty nasty problem that does way more damage than most know while they sleep.

  27. My C-Pap does not make any difference I actually feel more tired doing the day and can not function right because I am to tired when I do not put on the c pap I feel fine in the morning and the hole day that’s what I do not understand I went to the sleep center and had the test done and the told me every 68 second I stop breathing if that’s the case I would be tired the hole day because it means I do not sleep so why did I do feel fine and was not tired and now with the c pap I am more tired does anybody has the answer to that

  28. Thanks for the video. Great tips. I know some people have not had success with a CPAP, in some cases Adaptive Servo Ventilator is prescribed instead.

  29. But I heard people are having success with this method as well – https://bit.ly/2kaCxN2

  30. You clearly do not understand Obstructive Sleep Apnea. I am surprised at your irresponsibility. The only natural thing you can do to help Obstructive Sleep Apnea is to loose weight, if you are overweight. This advice is not appropriate for people with OSA. Your advice may help people with insomnia but there are many more important things for healthy sleeping that you do not even mention. Advice to other readers: Go to mercola.com Dr. Mercola and his research team are authentic and responsible.

  31. So simple. Like with any other health issue, it goes back to diet and exercise eating anti-imflamatory foods. Throwing away toxic prescription drugs. Getting oxygen into the lungs and cells. So important.

  32. record your sleep with a free app on your phone… than listen to it or view it on a computer with music editing, you will see the spikes directly … scary for me… the stop breathing episodes, no need for sleep study

  33. Some good points there, thank you. Besides diet, BMI and exercise, we should also look at mechanical aspects that can cause OSA. Here is my outline of how infant bottle-feeding can lead to airway malformation and sleep apnoea (and even be a cause SIDS).

The alternative means of feeding an infant, with bottle-feeding, can potentially affect the infant airway – and right through life should a resulting infant airway malformation not ever be treated or corrected. The website of the late Dr Brian Palmer on this research is included below.

Depending on INTENSITY, FREQUENCY and DURATION, infant bottle-feeding can lead to oral cavity malformation. As a baby has soft, malleable bones, bottle-feeding, depending on the above three factors, can malform the maxilla through the implosion effect of sucking on a bottle. The outcome, then, can essentially be a high-arched hard palate and a narrowed dental arch. With the consequent elevation of the hard palate and its narrowing, the posterior nasal accommodation above is then unavoidably compromised. And with this reduced nasal accommodation, pneumatic pressure during sleep is reduced (due to a reduction in the volume of air) as well as there being a prevailing inefficacy in the exchange of gases – since any one sleep phase accordingly dictates the respiratory drive. Further, if the raising of the hard palate is extreme, the nasal septum above can collapse and deviate (as the roof of the mouth is also the floor of the nasal cavity), causing further ventilation problems.

Another profoundly negative aspect of infant bottle-feeding, again, depending on the three factors as highlighted above, is where the epiglottis settles into an unnatural position in the airway following its natural descent. During the first few months of life, an infant is able to swallow breastmilk and breathe at the same time; and this is because the epiglottis is temporarily connected to the soft palate. Following this period, if a strong feeding infant is being intensively bottle-fed, the epiglottis can finally settle too low into the airway after its separation from the soft palate. The result here can mean not only a narrowed pharyngeal airway, but also an epiglottis that, apart from its primary function of capping the airway during swallow, cannot serve to properly brace the back of the tongue during sleep. Arguably, along with the high-arched palate problem, such an occurrence can lead to sleep apnoea and sleep hypopnoea – for life; and, worse, in the case of the infant, SIDS.

Most certainly, not every child is going to develop an airway malformation with having been bottle-fed, but mothers still need to know at the outset the inherent risks of bottle-feeding so that those mothers who are able to breastfeed can do otherwise by way of an informed choice. Breastfeeding involves a peristaltic action of suck which essentially does not affect the oral cavity and airway; hence breastfeeding is far superior to infant bottle-feeding.

  51. Do you actually KNOW someone who has cured sleep apnea? Or does your definition of OVERCOMING it just means managing it? I have modified my diet to eat healthier over the years, which did not prevent several chronic conditions from developing. I am willing to say, however, that I have already adopted the interventions in this video. They are helping me to manage my sleep as best I can, but the disorder isn't going anywhere. I've also read your suggestions about healing autoimmune disease such as Sjogren's Syndrome, which seem to be management solutions, as well. I do appreciate them, but I think that's what you should call them, instead of "how to overcome…"

  52. Will sleep apnea make you start shaking in your sleep?, Like your neck locks up and your head starts to shakes. Also do you think I should see an ENT because I can't breathe through my nose without getting a headache so could that also cause sleep apnea because I always breathe through my mouth

  53. This is gross but Mines is yeast related (trapped mucus in back of flap caused by food allergies or irritants). I have to eat more alkaline foods and drink a lot more water. That is what help me the most. When I do that, I lose the weight I need which is like only 5lbs and both help out drastically.

  54. I eat clean, dont drink, smoke and workout every day. I even bought an expensive mattress and pillow to help with sleep to even doing the oils and nasal sprays . Still I have issue with sleep apnea, now I have a cpap machine and sleep great

  55. All these dietary advices are concerned with decreasing vitamin B1 depletion (B1 deficiency, which causes 'Beri Beri,' mimicks a whole basket of other diseases and ailments like so called "Air Hunger" which also hits hardest at night). Vitamin B1 deficiency is a MAJOR cause of respiratory issues because the nerve centres of the brain stem responsible for breathing (both when you are awake and asleep) need B1 to support proper nerve conduction. Try supplementing with B1 and back it up with a natural source of B-Complex like brewers yeast to prevent deficiency in the other B-vitamins . . .

  58. Want to let you knowthis anti snoring remedy “Pοzοtο mawa” (Google it) has worked in my situation, utilizing the 3 minute version. It really is incredible, as I have been a heavy snorer as long as I can remember.
