So the role we play in exploring this
beautiful ocean behind us is to begin to develop an understanding of what’s out there and what we might use
and what we might develop for medical technologies. We’ve discovered this new antibiotic
that we’ve called anthracimycin and it is produced by a marine bacterium, a microorganism, postdoc Keon Jiang, in my lab isolated the pure compound and
determined the structure. It is an antibiotic that shows a high
degree of selectivity toward the anthrax toxin and we did see activity against Mersa.
It was clear that this was a new chemical compound
never seen before, not related to any other antibiotic types. This was an extremely
potent antibiotic, far more potent than most of
the antibiotics that are in use today. We believe this is a unique new antibiotic lead that could very well initiate studies in the pharmaceutical
industry where drug quality materials are
discovered, properly developed in the clinic,
properly developed in human trials and then result in a new antibiotic
compound, a drug.
