Occupational Therapy Assistant (2018) – ISU College of Technology

[Donna] I’m Donna Henderson, and
I’m in the Occupational Therapy
Assistant Program here at ISU. [Kelsey] And I am Kelsey Marley
and I am also in the OTA Program. [Donna] I knew I wanted to be
in a helping profession, and I know
that there’s lots of them out there. What drew me to Occupational
Therapy was how they take a
holistic approach to rehabilitation. There is a lot of learning, and there’s
reading, and there’s papers, but it’s totally interspurced with the action of doing. [Kelsey] Lots of doing, we push that quite a
bit with this program, is that we want to do it. So we’ll do a lecture and then we’ll have
a section of the class where we’re doing and practicing a lot of the things
that we’ve kind of talked about. The instructors are very great. We love them. They are always willing to help, they’re
willing to stay after class if we need it. They’re very knowledgeable, very supportive. [Donna] Yeah, I think one great thing
about our instructors is that they’ve
been in the field for so long, they’ve been OT practitioners for
a long time, they bring that practical
experience to the classroom. The profession of occupational therapy
is a growing profession, so it’s really
something that’s great to get into right now. [Kelsey] For me the most rewarding part of Occupational therapy is seeing them kind of grow over the sessions that you do with them and looking at the person they were
when they came and seeing the
person that they became afterwards. Whether you’re actually helping them compensate for that function or you’re
getting them to the prior level of function. It’s really amazing to see that person grow, and it just makes you so happy to
see what they become afterwards
and what you can do for them.
