Occupational Therapy Assistant

Occupational Therapy Assistant

The Occupational Therapy Assistant
program allows students to work under the supervision of occupational
therapists. Occupational therapy, in and of itself, is a profession that helps
people who’ve had injuries or illnesses to be as independent as possible. We work with a variety of tools and activities that will help the patient to perform
their daily occupations. One interesting fact is that this is actually the oldest
occupational therapy assistant program in the St. Louis metropolitan area, so it’s
well-established. I chose STLCC’s OTA program because I’ve worked with PTs and OTAs for many years, and they have all said that the OTA
program in St. Louis Community College is the best that they’ve seen. The
students that come out of there are really top-notch. Students will be able
to work in skilled nursing facilities, in hospitals, they also can work in the
community — there’s a wide variety of places they can work. For prospective
students, my advice would be: shadow more than just one setting. OTA has a broad
range of where we could go and to see the different types of settings before
you get into the program, I think would be very helpful. My favorite thing about
the OTA program at STLCC is the education we’re getting over all.
The teachers are very knowledgeable and we can work in many different settings
around the St. Louis area or even around the country. I love the students. The program is rigorous, and they require a lot of out-of-classroom time
to study, and yet they make time within their outside life schedules to be able
to achieve that. The things that they thought were really good included the
fact that there were small classroom sizes, and they felt like they had more
individualized attention, and they like the fact that the faculty are practicing
in the field, and they bring that current practice knowledge into the
classroom when they’re teaching.
