I’m Miranda Savioli with today’s health news.
The next step in a growing battle against antibiotic-resistant bacteria may come from
an unlikely place. Scientists in Europe have discovered a new protein-based antibiotic
called copsin, found in mushrooms grown in horse dung. The research team now believes
horse dung may become key to developing a new range of antibiotics, as it hosts a variety
of fungi and bacteria that compete for nutrients. While Copsin’s discovery is still in its early
stages, scientists believe it may work against bacteria resistant to current antibiotics.
