WE WORK SOMEWHAT WELL AS A ♪ [ theme ] Announcer: Here’s Earl Cameron. Good evening. Reporter: For nearly 30 years, Canadians have watched their
national news at 11:00. Tomorrow night,
that tradition dies on CBC. The venerable institution,
The National, goes at 10:00,
10:30 in Newfoundland, from this new set. It’s been called
the biggest gamble in the history
of Canadian Television. Will viewers kick a habit of
three decades standing because the CBC wants them to? If it is such a big gamble,
why do it? Mainly because we want to get
away from the dictates of the commercial ethic
which have always said that you can’t schedule
news in prime time. You have to sell entertainment
programming instead. So we are going
to get away from that, and we are going to
provide an alternative. We will be the only
major broadcaster who provides a newscast
in prime time. Reporter: For weeks,
the editors, producers, and reporters have been
preparing for opening night. It’s not just a different time
spot, the entire approach to newsgathering
is changing. At any point, are we going
to get ordinary people coming to this
silly meeting? Reporter: New technology,
techniques, and new depth to meet longstanding criticism
that TV news only brushes the surface, at least that’s
what executive producer, Tony Burman sees
in it for the viewer. We’re setting out, beginning
Monday, to put on the air a National that is both more
comfortable and warmer. And I think to viewers, I think
that will be reflected in the set, it’ll be
reflected in the animation, it’ll be reflected in the style
and presentation of graphics. The strength of our
program is our journalism, and that’s the area
we’ve spent most time on. But I think to
the viewer on Monday, the most evident change
will be presentation. Reporter: If a National is
trying to refine an old trade, The Journal is trying
to create a new one. A nation-wide
current affairs program immediately following
The National. Current affairs has
a long tradition at CBC, but there’s been nothing
quite like The Journal, and it’s creator,
Mark Starowicz, foresees some problems
in the early days. You stumble, you do
things right one day, you do it wrong
the other day. You find your stride. I’ll think we’ll
find their stride a few weeks down the road. I’m certainly
not predicting disasters, but, no, it is a new machine,
