#TomorrowsDiscoveries: Improving the Practice of Prescribing Antibiotics – Dr. Morgan Katz

>>Antibiotic resistance
is a growing threat to global health and is
fueled by widespread misuse of antibiotics. The majority of misuse
occurs in nursing homes where over 50% of suspected infections treated with antibiotics do
not actually require them. This practice has been
associated with the development of multidrug resistant
bacteria, or super bugs, as well as side effects
for nursing home residents, including severe diarrheal
disease and kidney failure. My name is Morgan Katz, and
I have dedicated my research to improve antibiotic
prescribing practices and to protect our
community from infection with antibiotic resistant bacteria. Many people use antibiotics
for a variety of symptoms, but without a definitive
diagnosis of infection, antibiotics can be more
harmful than helpful. I develop programs to
change this cultural belief and encourage all members
of the healthcare team to use antibiotics responsibly. (upbeat music)
