W.E. Moerner: Did you expect single molecule chemistry to lead to a major microscopy advance?

The, the thing that happens once you, when
you’re exploring fundamental science, you, you keep thinking of new
things as times goes on. and, and one of Stephan Hill’s
important contributions was to sensitize the world to going
beyond the diffraction limit, which you get first by stimulated
emission depletion microscopy. And I know that also influenced
Eric Betzig to start using several molecules and, and the control of
the molecules to get super resolution. So all of these so
we did not expect super resolution. We, we did expect lots of neat things to
be discovered because it was a new regime. Where there were surprises already
appearing even at the very beginning.
