What Are the Doshas? | Ayurveda Explained

Whether you’re new to Ayurveda or not, you’ve probably heard the word
“dosha” and wondered what it means. Doshas are the central concept in
the ancient tradition of Ayurveda: they represent energetic forces of nature
within the body and mind and are made up of the five
elements–earth, water, fire, air, and ether, also called space. These elements combine uniquely
to create the three doshas, vata, pitta, and kapha. Each dosha is primarily
composed of two main elements. The especially mobile nature of air and
the spacious quality of ether combine to create vata. In the body and mind, vata is expressed as movement,
creativity, and the flow of breath. The intense transformative nature of
fire and the spreading fluidity of water combine to forge pitta.
In the body and mind, pitta is expressed as digestion,
intelligence, and the metabolism. And finally, the solid density of earth and the
binding cohesion of water shape kapha. In the body and mind, kapha is
expressed as love, structure, and the lubrication of
the joints and tissues. The unique ratio of vata, pitta, and kapha within each of us
defines our Ayurvedic constitution, our individual blueprint
for optimal health. This significantly influences
our physical, mental,
and emotional tendencies, as well as our strengths
and vulnerabilities. If you don’t know your
Ayurvedic constitution, take the Dosha Quiz
linked in the description. As you learn more about the doshas, they can be found in
everyone and in everything. You can see them represented in
varying climates, like a windy, crisp fall day, or in different
foods like a spicy pepper, and within individual species, such as a slow sloth
or a quick hummingbird. Understanding the doshas is a wonderful
tool for appreciating our world as a force of nature. With time, the doshas can shed light
on our personal nuances, guide us in improving our self awareness, and help us to understand how to best
support ourselves when and where it matters most. We would love to support you in beginning
to recognize the doshas in your life. Be sure to watch our videos that describe
each of the doshas in complete detail. And don’t forget to like this
