Which TYPE of therapy is right for me? Mental Health Help with Kati Morton | Kati Morton

Hey everybody. Today I answer the question. What type of therapy is best for me? So like I said, Today I want to talk with you about finding
what type of therapy best fits your struggles. Or the issues that you are working on. I have heard from many of you that
it’s a big concern. Because often times we don’t even know
what CBT, DBT, just a bunch of acronyms. And we are like, ‘What the heck
I don’t know what’s best for me.’ So I’ve done some research and the most
common one that’s available world wide. I know many of you in the UK, Don’t really have many options around
what type of therapist you see. But regardless almost of where you live. CBT therapy is the only therapy
that can be statistically proven. We can see patients improvement over time. And therefore many of the
socialised medicine areas of the world. They utilise CBT for that reason, and
also because it’s very short term. It’s usually about 5-8 sessions. Depending. Now CBT is best for people with anxiety disorders, Whether you have generalised anxiety disorder,
panic disorder, you have panic attacks. Anything like that. If you have obsessive compulsive disorder. Or if you have any substance abuse issues. Now the reason that CBT works
so well for those issues. Is because at the core of what CBT is. And I have another video on this if
you want more information. But the core of what CBT is, is that
it works to correct our faulty thinking. So all of those automatic thoughts
that we have every day. Like, Oh we’re running late and
somebody’s really rude to us. We’re like that’s because I’m an ass-hole. Or that’s because I’m a jerk. Or I’m so lazy. Or I’m so fat. Or whatever those automatic
thoughts we have. CBT works to figure out what belief
is that automatic thought drawing from. And how can we help change it. So they do a lot of things like
I do in my workbooks. Where we talk back to the negative voice. We keep record of these thoughts
and we argue against them. We do a bunch of different things
around what thoughts we have. And then changing them from negative
thoughts into healthy happy thoughts. Because they believe that your
thoughts equal your actions. Okay. The next type of therapy that I
have talked a lot about. And something that I do also in
my practice personally. Is DBT therapy. Now if you want more information on DBT,
I have a video on that as well. So you can search on youtube
for that and find it. If you want a little bit more
in-depth explanation. But DBT was originally
created by Marsha Linehan. And the reason that she created
this was for people with BPD. Or Borderline Personality Disorder. So it works really well for people
who struggle with that. And DBT is essentially CBT
meets emotion regulation. And I’ve said this before but a lot of
people with Borderline have been, The way that they describe it is being
like a burn victim to emotions. So like everything is so super sensitive. And when things happen we get really hurt. And so that’s why the emotion
regulation component is so important. Now we also find that DBT is great for
people with eating disorders. People with substance abuse issues. And we’re even, the newer way that they are
using it is actually people with schizophrenia. So you can see that there is always
a wide range of therapies. There is always new therapies coming out. Therapy is a changing field. And there is always something new. They are always trying new things. There is new research happening. But this is just to date. Many of the reasons that we use DBT. Now the reason DBT works best
for eating disorders, And substance abuse, and
borderline personality disorder. Is because it helps us not only correct that
faulty thinking that we talked about with the CBT. But it helps us regulate our emotion when
we feel like our emotions are controlling us. Versus the other way around. Now the most common therapy. So we have CBT, we have DBT. And now we have talk therapy. And I’m just going to
call it talk therapy, To kind of encompass what
most therapists will do. If you make an appointment
and you are nervous, And you are wondering what your
first appointment will look like. It’s most likely going to be talk therapy. And the reason that we do that most. Is because a lot of people
may not know exactly. They may not have a diagnosis. They may not know exactly why
they are really coming to you. They’re struggling with this one thing
but they are just feeling overwhelmed. And talk therapy helps us not only
work through some of our past stuff. Figuring out ways that we were raised. And things that have happened to us. And how that may affect us now. We can also beg borrow and steal
from all other types of therapy. And so talk therapy just helps
us process through what’s happening. Maybe we’re using some CBT skills. We talk back to the voices. And then we get better. Now talk therapy can help us
with mainly mood disorders. Now I’m going to say mood disorders, Because talk therapy isn’t something for
those of us who are severely mentally ill. People who may need hospitalisation. We may need an inpatient treatment. When we feel like our life
is really unmanageable, Talk therapy is not usually the best. We need a full treatment
team at that point. But if you’re feeling depressed. You’re feeling kind of anxious sometimes. You’re going through a divorce. Maybe you’re just having some
family communication issues. Maybe you are about to get married. And you are doing
pre-marital counselling. All of that falls under talk therapy. And the reason that it helps so much, Is because often times what most of us
are looking for is someone who is unbiased. As unbiased as someone can be. They only know what we tell them. And they can reflect things back to us. And help us process through what
may feel chaotic in our own mind. They can slow it down. Help explain things to us. Help us come to good healthy
decisions in our life. So no matter what type of
therapy is available to you. No matter if it’s CBT, DBT, talk therapy. They are all beneficial. For all issues. Some are just more specialised. So if you have the ability to
find a specialised therapist. I would enourage you to do so. But for those of you who don’t. Don’t think that you can’t
seek certain therapy, Because it’s not specialised for
what you are struggling with. It will still help. And I hope this helps kind of
navigate the whole therapy realm. Because we use terms in the therapy world
that often times regular people don’t even know. And it doesn’t make sense to them. And no one explains
what the difference is. But know that as long as you’re
working in your own process. With your therapist. Things will get better. And continue working with me. Towards a healthy mind and a healthy body. Community. We learn from one another. If you have certain

  3. I have agoraphobia, depression and anxiety since I was a kid. When I got 18, I lock myself in my house and for 2 years I have not been able to go out or having friends home. Just the idea of going out gave me nausea/panic attack (My panic attack is related to my Emetophobia). I started to see a social worker ( Free in Québec, Canada – but you will have to be on a waiting list for 6month to 2 years ). I do a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) since 5 months. I had a diner at the restaurant with my family, saw friends and even go to the cinema with my mom today! It’s better week after week. It really helped me with my anxiety/agoraphobia. Things get better.

  6. I don't want to go to therapy because the only therapist available in my town is the same one who told me when I was getting help for anxiety that my problems aren't real and if I think of it like that enough then I won't still think I have anxiety

  8. CBT is good only on short terms. On the long terms, the problems and symptomes will come back. To cure them definetly you need talk therapy – it's very long, but once it works (it may not work because it asks alot of patience), it's great and "eternal".

  9. All these types of therapy sound amazing. I just feel like I'm too far gone. I wish I had a therapist when I was 8. It might have prevented me from creating a life that I absolutely hate.

  10. I've taken EBT, REBT, t Mindfullness, Anger Mgt and currently CBt. CBT is good, although NOT necessarily a panacea.

  11. I feel like I need DBT…I haven't been diagnosed with BPD, but I feel like it describes me very well. I'm in CBT right now and it's really not working very well.

  13. Welp, now that I know what type of therapy I'd like to try, I guess its time for me to figure out what miracle it's going to take to get my mom to let me go to a therapist.

  14. I need you….PLEASE!!!! I'm American living in Madrid, Spain with a 13 year old. We moved here three months ago bc last August this daughter started doing very risky behavior in Miami and I wanted to get my teens out of there. Since we arrived in Spain this daughter has cut, taken a bottle of pills in front of me, run away many times, and has been in the psych ward twice. She has been getting therapy for a year. But here's the thing. About 12 psychiatrist (in the States and in Spain) have said they have no doubt that she does NOT have any signs of a mental disorder. Infact, last Saturday she wrote a suicide note, and the psych ward would not take her bc they said she is just trying to manipulate her dad and I. Aka, needs something from us.

    Here was the shocker for me. When we went this Monday to follow up with her therapist and psychiatrist they said they did not think she should continue therapy bc she must WANT to change. She said she does not want my daughter to think therapy does not work. She does not want my daughter to hate it, but instead in the future seek it out as something helpful and a positive experience.


  15. How do you measure people getting better with CBT? Survey? If so I don't believe it works. Ive been through CBT and it didn't do anything but I think that people think they're getting better if they're paying a lot of money for it and want to be a "successful" example of treatment. Also because they say that you'll progress every week you think you're getting better

  16. Is there any key to finding a good therapist in general once you know what kind you want? Or do you just have to see several before finding a good one? Honestly I get the feeling most of them are pretty unskilled.

  17. CBT claim about efficacy is bogus according to APA task force investigating the efficacy of EBTs. There are also meta analysis by Wampold, Norcross, Shedler and others that argue that there is no real difference between models. Original study on DBT was done on a sample size of 17 and follow-up of 9. I'm sure that you know that to generate a normal curve the sample size has to be at least 29. Furthermore findings are measured in standard deviation which requires a normal curve. Plus there is a study "The Empirical Basis of Dialectical Behavior Therapy: Summary, Critique, and Implications
    Karen R. Scheel, University of Oklahoma, looks at the fallacies in Linehan's findings. How's that for evidence?

  18. I don't know if this will reach you, but I need help. There's too much to get into, do I will give a brief run down. I got severely injured at work almost 9 years ago and almost died 2 years ago from the injuries, before NY work comp made a half ass attempt to get me treatment. I've had 2 therapist ( first moved further south in Florida, while the one he transferred me to has been the therapist for almost 3 years). The 1st was good, but not long enough to really get in deep before he moved and the current one, well he seems to just collecting $ from NY work comp (to me anyway). I have told him I need homework and other options than just coming in and "giving my side of the story." I'm in a bind as no one else in Ocala, FL (where I live) will take a work comp case. I'm getting worse and all I am really getting is a tongue lashing, need to find my spiritual center and I make excuses for not burdening others (who have their own problems- then yelled at saying I'm judging others). I've tried reaching out, but getting told I'm annoying, waste of time and to just kill myself, I stopped even telling how I feel, but I try with my therapist and now getting harsh treatment and he drifts off sometimes and just gives off the vibe that I'm bothersome to him. What do I do? I don't have a supportive family, nor a support system, can't work right now (anxiety goes to the roof if I have to leave the room I am intruding in on at my parents)? I have went beyond my breaking point and causes blood vessels to break in my face this past Monday, when everything was too much, got sick, threw up violently and after cleaning up, my face was crazy looking. Took a pic, sent it to my primary and she called, told me my nerves are overloaded and I had broken a lot of blood vessels in my face while getting sick. Use ice on my face and about 1 week it will heal. So i know I need more help, but have no clue where to get it…not much in my town, besides a pill mill called the centers. Any ideas?   19. Talk therapy is almost pointlessly vague, lumping anything that isn't CBT or DBT together, I know that this video is not a class on therapeutic styles but hitting the major three seems doable. CBT and the other heavy on skills training and correction of "unhealthy" or "negative" thoughts, Psycho dynamic exploring insight in unconscious choice structures developed in early life, and humanist existential with a focus on interpersonal growth toward actualizing and developing positive therapeutic relationships.

  20. Ugh I need trauma therapy but I'm kinda stuck with talk therapy for now, and it's really just making me feel invalidated.

  21. CBT is garbage in my mind. We need therapists that have better, and different therapies. DBT is also a joke. I know thousands of people who have failed it, or it only worked for a little while if at all. Time to get away from these therapies and look at others.

  23. I think Talk therapy mixed with DBT is best for me I tried CBT I hated it it felt Stressed but I believe it can be good

  25. kati, I absolutely love your videos. I only recently came across them. However, they have enlightened me a little bit about my illness and the type of therapy I'm getting, and I'm just not sure things are going well. I see my therapist once a week for Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Major Depressive Disorder.

    Almost all of each therapy session consists of basically talking about what happened the previous week with my symptoms and how I was able to cope. This doesn't sound as deep as what I might need. I've been going for five years.

    I have admittedly gotten BETTER but not better enough. I know I can't pour out all the details here, but what are your thoughts on this situation? Thanks!

  27. Any views on ISTDP therapy? (Intensive short-term dynamic psychotherapy) I'm having sessions at the moment but it's a very strange approach to to have an argumentative therapist so any reviews or advice greatly appreciated! Thanks x

  28. EMDR all the way. I disconnected too much from CBT/DBT/even talk therapy at times. EMDR is what is putting me back into my body.

  29. Since you first published this video, have you had any experience with EMDR? It is the type of therapy my LPC used to treat my PTSD. Just wondering if it is something that you would now include as one of the types of therapies, or if it is still not very common. For the record, it has been very effective for me. I also have enjoyed your videos; thanks for sharing!

  30. I live in the uk. I’ve being doing what my cpn calls structured clinically management with my cpn for about 3 years or maybe more. Have you heard of this kati? 3 years ago I done what is called the decider skills course. & before that I started something called the therapeutic community. I was only able to do about 2 to 3 months of this due to it finishing due to lack of government funs, this was originally a 18 month programe

  31. I’m scared I need a Inpatient treatment because my life is kind of gone to shit I’m kind of losing it I’ve been to a few talk therapist been on some medications nothing really worked I have PTSD bipolar and anxiety and depression I’m not really sure what I should do

  32. Hi Kati, I'm excited about your efforts to get the message out. But your information is really incorrect. CBT is not "the only research based" practice or theory, etc. It is a very generic, used and misused term. DBT was a take off of Choice Theory and the zeitgeist. It is well promoted in the insurance industry, but beware, it is not a theoretical approach in and of itself. Most therapists? Overgeneralization! You really don't seem to have a clue of the well developed professional therapeutic approaches.

  34. Can you talk about psychoanalytic or modern psychoanalytic therapies? My therapist says he does this. I lie on a couch and face away because I was getting affirmed I was reading emotional states of others well (empath he says) in group but then felt gaslighted during individual with my therapist, which he was probably doing to protect himself and me from discounting him based on his personal reactions? Not sure. He doesn't do a lot of what I think is DBT. I'm a Nutrition counselor (RD) but think I use a hodgepodge of motivational interviewing, CBT, DBT, emotion checking. But I've picked up everything I've got from being with my therapist 2x/wk for 7 yrs for group and individual. Dietitian training was like 2 two week rotations in private practice eating disorders and one horrible class taught by an absent professor on counseling and education. Wouldn't be able to do my job without having been in therapy and continuing to go

  35. My problem is alcohol and honestly nothing will ever help. I’ve done everything from the shot in the butt to cbt to lock up siezer ect. I just have had to do it on my own. I tried with therapy but it just took me getting sick of vomiting all the time and being sick and miserable. Still feel like shit but yeah I don’t know what’s wrong with me wether I’m just at a broken point if that exist or if there is still a problem. I mean I don’t care. I don’t wana hurt myself or definitely not anyone else. Stuff doesn’t impede. I mean fheee is anxiety and a lot of alcohol use but nothing stops
    Me. I just do not care. What the heck I can’t figure myself out cause I have have huge anxiety. I have been on all kinds of drugs the va got me on some of that and this but ah after the military I have been told I have a high lane case of ptsd but shit why am I just blind now. Well anyways you probly won’t answer but I can at least tell others there are some
    People out there that have went to looked for and received help but it’s just never going to end for some. But your not alone

    ? Like a pill which works for short time? And that's it's beneficial for the insurence company which wants to pay as little as possible? Serious problems need time … and deeper changes.

  37. You described REBT as CBT….????? Get your information right. Get up to date. REBT is literally disputing negative thoughts/beliefs and turning them into rational beliefs.

  38. Don't people realize that they already know what is causing their depression and/or self-destructive behavior? We talk to ourselves constantly. Every waking thought is you talking to you. Pay money to a person who makes a living giving condescending advice? Telling you exactly what you don't or do want to hear? You know you better than any other person can or will. Ask yourself the questions you have. Think.

  39. When my therapist was doing cbt all she did was say “this is because you’re bipolar. This is because you’re bipolar.” Like she wouldn’t help me all she did was say I am manic, or depressed. Okay. So she said she was doing cbt with me? But there was no participation on my part… so I switched..

  44. Thanks for mentioning that because I have MDD and PMDD and it is pretty bad. I've only been hospitalized once and my counselors have talked me out of self harm and suicide but I'm not feeling happy.

  45. My thing that I don’t understand , is if we have to have a specific kind of therapist , for past trauma.
    And also I want to have faith in the telephone assessment, that I have but I’m wondering if it’s best to have a face to face meeting with the therapist for an assessment , I guess I need to just have a little faith in it. I really wonder if I’m the only person that struggles to talk to an unknown person I’ve never seen in person about personal things ?
    But I’m greatfull for these videos that help answer our questions & help us know these feelings are normal . Im happy there are these self help videos to guide us ,& validate our feelings xx thanks kati ❤️

  46. Has anyone else lied to their therapist to escape judgement? Online therapy does not hold me accountable enough, but I saw a “therapist” who-each week-forgot the important details of my life. I left as I did not feel “bad enough” to need her help, which I know, in itself, demonstrates I do need help. By the way, I didn’t lie about hurting others or myself, I lied about my past by leaving out details of my romantic relationships. I feel I’ve never been accurately diagnosed, but ¯_(ツ)_/¯ I keep going:)
